Do kids need books?

Hey book-lovers, don't throw a book at me just because I'm asking this simple question. But do children really need books? Can't they just play, play the fool, play at fantasising and play dumb too, and still grow up to be sane, socially-productive beings?

If you give me one good reason why every child should read a book......maybe I'll....ok, let me come to that later.

Because reading forms a necessary part of any education system?

Because reading is also fun and play for them? Its we adults who make it sound like study for them and kill the simple joy of reading.......
